AHA, KPS recognize student and teacher for helping save a life

KALKASKA — The heroic efforts of a Kalkaska High School student, as well as the life-saving lessons of one of his teachers, were recognized at the regular monthly meeting of the Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, Sept. 21.

In her report to the board, KHS principal Staci Short said that junior Jacob Birgy had recently been presented with a “Heartsaver Hero Award” from the American Heart Association for his efforts in helping save the life of a complete stranger while driving from Kalkaska to the Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City on the night of Sept. 8.

According to reports, Birgy had left football practice in Kalkaska and was driving on Supply Road, near the Woodland School, when he noticed a group of individuals on the side of the road.
