Blazers hire Cheever as new varsity boys basketball coach

KALKASKA — One year away from coaching basketball was all Lyle Cheever needed to realize he couldn’t do without it.
That’s the how the 25-year coaching veteran landed at Kalkaska High School, where he was named the boys varsity head coach last week.
“I’m 60 years old,” said Cheever. “I’ve been (coaching) a long time and I enjoy the experience. I took a year off to see if it was something I really want to do and I found out I missed it terribly.”
