BOC, residents await answers over water level concerns

BELLAIRE – Approximately a dozen Intermediate Lake riparian property owners attended last Thursday’s monthly Board of Commissioners' meeting looking for help to relieve the threat of high water levels.

They were told by Commission Chair Ed Boettcher during public comment that the subject of a rumored special assessment district to fund dredging of the Intermediate River was not on the day's agenda, disappointing some of those attending the meeting.

"We had been told by a usually reliable source that a possible special assessment would be discussed," said Sherry Kremer, a member of the Intermediate Lake Association who attended the meeting and spoke briefly during public comment. "Apparently, that was bad information."

"Well, it's not on the agenda and we have no plans to discuss the subject," Boettcher told her. "We are still waiting to hear back from our legal counsel about Antrim County's obligations in this matter."

Kremer introduced herself as a resident of the Central Lake area who lives on Intermediate Lake.

“My husband Al and I don't have it as bad as others, but we've had our beach washed away over the last few years,” said Kremer. “We'd like to see something done by the Commissioners to improve the lake levels, sooner rather than later. The loss of our beach is not good environmentally."

Although water levels on the Chain Of Lakes have dropped considerably in recent weeks, high water levels remain a concern of many riparian property owners after minor flooding, which first occurred on the upper chain three years ago following a sudden heavy spring snow melt, occurred once again on some properties this spring.

Members of the lake association are expected to meet later this month in a closed session with Boettcher and Antrim County's legal counsel.
