BELLAIRE – In a repeat and update on several previous sessions, the Bellaire Chamber of Commerce hosted a "community coffee brainstorming" session last week with local business owners, chamber staff and representatives from the Bellaire Historical Society, New Hope Community Church, and Antrim Conservation District.

Moderated by Bellaire Chamber Assistant Director Rachel Krino, the informal Feb. 6 forum, which was open to the public, was held at Toonie's Fish and Steakhouse in downtown Bellaire.

Krino began the event by asking those attending to list “what they love” about the village of Bellaire. Among the many features cited were the village's location and proximity to the Chain of Lakes. the surrounding area's natural beauty as well as the beauty of the village itself, friendly residents and business owners, year-round recreational opportunities, and the village's "walkability."

The group was then asked to suggest what changes could be made to improve the village, which prompted a host of ideas and "wish lists," ranging from an interest in more summer outdoor concerts and restaurants – to more economic development, housing and infrastructure such as a new sewer system.

Installation of broadband Internet and better overall Internet service was also high on most lists, as well as more recreational opportunities, such as a walkway along the river, in the village itself.

Noting that Antrim County's Barnes Park is "too far away" to benefit the village to any extent, while the village's Craven Park Campground lacks amenities and size, several of those attending voiced a need for more camping facilities in the area, such as a state park.
