Brrrr! Heavy snow, extreme cold slams Antrim, Kalkaska counties
REGION – Those who headed "over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house" on Christmas Day, or again on Dec. 30, may have found skis or a sleigh a better means of transportation than a motorized vehicle in Antrim and Kalkaska counties – as well as southern Charlevoix County, when Mother Nature dumped as much as 36 inches of snow on the region, then followed it up with extreme cold.
Both storms were impressive, said Antrim County Road Commission Manager/Engineer Burt Thompson, who made Christmas a little merrier for his crews by calling them into work on a holiday, giving all willing to climb into a plow truck, as well as mechanics and other back-up personnel, extra jingle in their pocketbooks in the form of overtime holiday pay to keep the county's roads passable.
