CENTRAL LAKE – A number of police, fire and emergency vehicles – and their respective personnel from throughout Antrim County – will be in Central Lake on Wednesday, June 19, particularly around Central Lake Public Schools, but there won't be any need for alarm.

On that day, both morning and afternoon, Central Lake Public Schools will participate in two mock emergency exercises with area law enforcement and first responders, at both school buildings.

The purpose of the drills is to allow emergency responders to practice working hand-in-hand with one another, and with district staff, in the event of a true emergency on a public school campus, said Central Lake Public Schools Superintendent Lenore Angeli-Weaver.

“We know this type of drill could cause widespread alarm, which is why we are conducting it after school is dismissed for the summer," Angeli-Weaver noted. "We will be regularly communicating information to our community leading up to the drills, so that everyone understands what is happening around our school buildings."

Two emergency drills will take place, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each involving different emergency scenarios. Community members will not be able to access the site during the drills. Police officers will be establishing a safety perimeter around the campus and controlling access to the elementary and middle/high school buildings.

Participating emergency responders will include the Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, Central Lake Police Department, Central Lake Township Fire Department, Antrim County Office of Emergency Management, and the Township Ambulance Authority, which services nine county townships, including Central Lake Township.

Antrim County Emergency Services Director Leslie Meyers, who coordinated the exercise at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility several months ago, will also be overseeing the June 19 event.
