Council asks library for alternative expansion plan
ELK RAPIDS – While they didn’t actually deny a proposal to expand the Elk Rapids District Library, village council members did request an alternative proposal for consideration.
That request came Monday night after more than three years of planning, professional consultation, public input and discussion at various levels.
The much-anticipated vote on the initial proposal to allow the district library to build a 6,320 square-foot expansion to the historic Island House property never came. Instead, after hearing additional public comments during its regular meeting Monday night, council members agreed to discuss the proposal among themselves in open session offering up opinions on how they would vote.
From that discussion it became clear that the initial proposal would be denied. Prior to that indication Village president Jim Janisse went around the table asking each trustee for their thoughts.
