Council holds off on proposal to cover village officials
KALKASKA – The question for the Kalkaska Village Council isn’t whether the village should help protect local officials, but might be how many people will be covered under a proposal and under what conditions.
The council tabled an amendment to its policy to “defend and indemnify” village officials at its last regular meeting on June 11. That could delay any action on the policy proposal until the board’s next meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 9.
According to the proposal, the village would purchase insurance coverage and provide for the possible legal defense, in case of potential civil action against them, for officials including the village president, council members, clerk, treasurer and manager.
However, the policy change drew both support and criticism from those attending the June 11 meeting, as some questioned whether the policy’s scope was too small or whether it might expose the village to greater financial liability.
