Donation will serve to increase cancer outreach in community
BELLAIRE – Thanks to a generous gift last week from the Antrim County High Tea for Breast Cancer Prevention (ACHTBCP) organization, the Bellaire Family Health Center (BFHC) will be able to help raise awareness and treat those affected by cancer throughout the community.
ACHTBCP board members were on hand last Wednesday to present an $8,000 check to BFHC representatives.
“This is wonderful,” said BFHC Site Director Jill Wolgamott.
In a letter to ACHTBCP last fall, Wolgamott outlined the need for assistance in covering the costs of patient education and outreach materials.
“We have struggled to achieve our target screening rate,” Wolgamott wrote. “Our CHWs (community health workers) currently monitor daily schedules to identify these patients. We are in desperate need of support to increase our outreach and user population to recall women that are current patients and those who have been patients in the past, but are no longer active.
“We also need to improve our proactive effort to recall women that are active patients but are not completing annual exams, cervical cancer screening – including mammograms.”
ACHTBCP President Tambra Lockwood and vice president Dee Lynch were glad to be in a position to help.
