Elk golfers win opening meets
BOYNE CITY — The usual late start to the boys golf season does not appear to have hindered Elk Rapids this year. The Elks won their second match of the season with a 331 on Monday playing on the Alpine Golf Course at Boyne Mountain. The Elks opened the Lake Michigan Conference season with a 353 for a one-stroke victory playing at the Charlevoix Country Club on Saturday.
At Alpine, Josh Lavely (75), Jack Hawkins (76), Preston Ball (85) and Gage Vowels (95) scored for the Elks, finishing ahead of second place St. Francis with a 350. There were eight teams competing in the meet.
At the nine-team season opener on Saturday, Lavely (83), Hawkins (84), Ball (90) and Vowels (96) were one stroke better than St. Francis.
