A Fine Finish: Eagles dominate third, fourth quarters to take district title

LAKE LEELANAU — Bellaire was in a little bit of trouble when it faced an eight-point deficit early in the third quarter of Friday’s Division 4 girls basketball district championship game against Leland.

A wake-up call during a timeout proved to be the turning point for the Eagles.

Bellaire head coach Brad Fischer challenged his team in the huddle during the break and the rest of the game belonged to the Eagles, who outscored the Comets 25-4 the rest of the way and cruised to a 36-23 victory.

“We had a very frank conversation during the time out,” said Fischer, who was more fiery than usual during a crucial time out. “We just needed to wake up and remember who we were. I reminded them who we were, and I reminded them what a lot of hard work and intensity does for us. They could’ve crumbled when I jumped them, but they took it to heart and ran with it.”
