BELLAIRE – Robert Vincent Gerring, convicted of murdering a Chestonia Township man and attempting to murder the man's 15-year-old neighbor, will serve between 45 and 80 years in prison for his crimes.
During a morning filled with emotion, 13th Circuit Court Judge Thomas G. Power imposed the sentence Monday on Gerring, 30, of Mancelona, for the murder of Daniel Sutherland. Sutherland, 64, died on March 12 of injuries he suffered from two massive shotgun wounds two days earlier.
Power also sentenced Gerring to 20-50 years in prison, to be served concurrently, for the attempted murder of the juvenile, who has recovered physically from his injuries but according to his mother has suffered mentally – and is currently in counseling, along with other members of the family.
The sentences came after Sutherland's wife and two children, as well as both parents of the injured juvenile, all addressed the court.
