Helping Hand: Good Samaritan continues to serve those in need
ELLSWORTH – On Thanksgiving Day most will sit down to tables overflowing with foods our ancestors never knew existed, thoughts full of our personal blessings and the holiday season ahead, when most will celebrate with gifts for beloved family and friends and wonderful holiday treats.
But, despite the improved economy, that won't be the case for all, according to Mary Peterson, founder and director of Good Samaritan Family Services in Ellsworth.
"There is always the elderly widow, living alone with her immediate family far away, who is heating her house with space heaters because she can't afford to buy gas; the single mom with a new baby at home and no income at all; families with children experiencing medical issues, and too many families who just can't make ends meet on the low pay they receive from their jobs – despite the fact that many of these families have a head of household working two, or even three, different jobs," Peterson said.
