High water levels causing major erosion issues on Elk Rapids Township road
ELK RAPIDS — Media publicity and videos in recent months have shown without a doubt that, with the record high water levels of the past few years, erosion along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Leelanau, Benzie, and Manistee Counties is causing big problems.
But, although no homes are in immediate danger of falling into the water in Antrim County, shoreline erosion is also a problem there, especially in Elk Rapids Township, where encroaching water levels have washed out large portions of embankment alongside Bayshore Drive, leaving the pavement mere feet from the waters of Grand Traverse Bay.
Antrim County Road Commission Manager Burt Thompson has been monitoring the situation on two areas of the roadway for some time.
