Judge calls increase in opiate abuse ‘alarming’

New 13th Circuit Court Judge Kevin Elsenheimer appeared before the Kearney Township Board of Trustees during its monthly meeting Monday night, telling the officers and audience that the increase in opiate abuse in the district, which comprises Antrim, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties, is "alarming."

BELLAIRE – New 13th Circuit Court Judge Kevin Elsenheimer has only been on the bench for a few months, but he has already noticed a disturbing trend.

"The increase in opiate abuse in this area is alarming," Elsenheimer told the Kearney Township Board of Trustees Monday night. "I see addicts in my court every single week."

The judge made the statements to the board as part of his presentation of the 13th Circuit Court's annual report for 2016, which covered court caseloads and work in Antrim, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties.
