Street Fest vendors at last year’s event beat the heat with canopies and tents as the temps soared into the high 90s at Railroad Square. Vendors included crafters, community organizations, food products, lotions, soaps, wood and retail items, and even a masseuse.

KALKASKA – This Saturday, Aug. 17, is shaping up to be a red hot celebration in downtown Kalkaska with the return of Street Fest 2019.

The event begins at noon and there is no fee to enter. A large portion of the main attractions are also free, including live music throughout the day and movie “School of Rock” (PG-13) to be shown at dusk.

Food, craft and sales vendors will be on hand as well as games, face painting and a scavenger hunt. The entire event is being held as a fundraiser for the Kalkaska Skatepark Initiative to build a recreational park for local skateboarders, skaters, BMX-ers, scooter and wheelchair users.

The live music offerings feature the nationwide pop and rock Summer sTOURies 2019 Tour. It will be headlined by lead singer and songwriter Ryan Dunson of the band Rookie of the Year and Mark Rose of the group Spitalfield. Other acts include City Under Siege, Bluprint, and Shane Archer Reed.

From noon to 2 p.m., local musician Jenise Root will be performing.

A fundraiser dance marathon is also scheduled to start at 2 p.m. A small fee is required for those taking part and observing the dance-off. To become a contestant, a $6 fee is required for individuals or $10 per couple. One hundred percent of the money raised will be donated to the skatepark project.

Dance marathon organizer and lead fundraiser for the Kalkaska Skatepark Committee Kenzie Root reminds everyone that to win and have fun at a dance marathon, participants only have to have determination and endurance.
