KMHC expansion clears final hurdle with site plan approval

KALKASKA – Possibly one of the most historic building projects in the Village of Kalkaska’s history has cleared yet another hurdle toward becoming a reality.

Plans for the estimated $14-million project to expand the campus of the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, and pave the way for additional services, were unanimously approved Feb. 1 by the Kalkaska Village Planning Commission. That follows a site-plan review by village manager Scott Yost and winning the approval of voters last spring.

Voters in all 12 townships of Kalkaska County, as well as in the village, approved a 10-year, 1.6-mill millage renewal for capital improvements at KMHC. The proposal passed by a better than 2-to-1 margin, with 1,546 “yes” votes to only 705 “no” votes.

“(And), on Feb. 1, the Planning Commission OK’d the largest project in the village limits in the history of Kalkaska,” Yost said at the Feb. 12 Kalkaska Village Council meeting. “It is the largest project that’s ever occurred in Kalkaska’s history.
