KALKASKA – Spring in the Village of Kalkaska might include a lot more than May flowers, at least this year.

According to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Administrator Kevin Rogols, members of the KMHC medical staff could soon be moving into a new “medical pavilion,” part of a $14.1-million expansion project at the local facility.

Rogols issued the update during the Kalkaska Village Council’s regular meeting Monday, May 13.

The construction project started in the first half of 2018, following a successful millage campaign that resulted in voters in all of Kalkaska County’s 12 townships and the village approving a 10-year, 1.6-mill renewal in May 2017.

According to KMHC officials, the project is set to include:

  • Expanding the number of private rooms for long-term care
  • Establishing dedicated facilities for chemotherapy and infusion services
  • Increase the availability of primary and specialty care physicians
  • Establish facilities for chronic disease management services
  • Enhance access to emergency and diagnostic services
  • Establish a new, single “main entrance” to KMHC and expand parking.

As part of the project, Kalkaska EMS, which is housed on the hospital campus, would also be decentralized.

To help make room for expanded facilities and more parking spaces, the village previously agreed to vacate portions of Second and Coral streets.

Overall, Rogols informed council members that the expansion project is about a month ahead of schedule and $380,000 under budget.
