KALKASKA - Kalkaska Public Schools will be dipping into its savings – or more precisely its fund balance – to make ends meet for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.

The district board of education unanimously approved the budget plan at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, June 19.

The general fund budget plan includes projected expenditures of $16.47 million. That’s about $1.1 million more than KPS projected spending during the current 2017-18 school year.

KPS is ending the 2017-18 school year on a positive note, with $15.71 million set to top the $15.39 million in revenues, allowing the addition of more than $317,000 to the district’s fund balance.

However, KPS officials are planning to dip into that fund balance to make ends meeting this coming school year. With projected revenues of $14.89 million, the approved budget plan calls for using more than $1.58 million from the fund balance.

“We are planning for a decline of 35 students,” said KPS Supt. Karen Sherwood. “This, along with reduced estimated federal revenues (title monies), account for the dip in revenue.

“The board plans to allocate from fund balance to cover the higher expenditures.”
