KALKASKA – The Michigan State Police recently awarded Kalkaska Public Schools with a $219,000 grant for school safety. The money will benefit all five schools in the district, including Rapid City Elementary, Birch Street Elementary, Cherry Street School, Kalkaska Middle School, and Kalkaska High School.

The funds will be used to purchase technology and equipment to improve security and increase safety of the student body and staff. Those measures will be in addition to current policies in place throughout the district, such as requiring visitors to request entrance through a buzzer system before entering any of the school buildings.

“This grant amount allows KPS to make our schools even more safe for our children,” explained KPS Superintendent Terry Starr . “With secure entrances and all doors kept locked throughout school days, we ensure people coming in do so through our offices.

“We now have additional financial resources to provide increased safety both on the inside and outside of our schools,” he said.
