MANCELONA — The magic ran out on the Lady Elks postseason run, just barely, as they fell to Charlevoix 48-47 in the Division 3 regional semifinal played in Mancelona on Monday.

The Elks came from behind to defeat Manton and St. Francis to win their first district championship since 2012 last week, and against Charlevoix, they nearly did so again.

A slow start saw the teams tied at 5-5 with just over two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Charlevoix scored seven unanswered points, including a three at the buzzer, for a 12-5 lead after one. The second quarter rained threes over the first four minutes. The Rayders connected on long distance shots on three successive trips, while the Elks countered with threes from Olivia Travis, Drew Antcliff and Rebecca Marolf, erasing a 10-point deficit to stay within seven points. Kenzie Huber added one more three for the Elks and the teams headed into halftime with the Rayders leading 25-21.
