Ellsworth students from the Forest Ecology class recently displayed their Land Use projects at the Lancer Leap showcase alongside teacher Clayton Faivor, ACD employee Meghan Chase and AmeriCorps Member Brian Talsma.

ELLSWORTH – The 8th Annual Lancer Leap showcase was held on Thursday, June 7 at Ellsworth High School. A culmination of a three-week project- based term at the end of the school year, the showcase consists of displays and performances from all of the school’s elective classes, including offerings such as Canoe Building, Legos, Painting En Plein Air, and Stem and Sports.

“Lancer Leap is a fantastic way to end the year,” said EPS Supt. Aaron Gaffney, who led the Canoe Building class. “Kids have fun. They learn something. It’s exhausting, but it’s fun to see kids in a different light.”

This year, the Lancer Leap program was able to offer a new elective experience to students, Forest Ecology, made possible through a partnership with the Antrim Conservation District (ACD). During the course of the program, the ACD worked with science teacher Clayton Faivor and 14 high school students to learn about local natural resources and conservation strategies.

As a part of the class, students were able to meet with and learn from multiple ACD staff experts on several excursions covering a wide variety of topics. Those included a trip to Phelps Sawmill with Forester Mike Meriwether, a discussion of invasive species at the Darnton Family Nature Preserve with Invasive Species CAKE Coordinator Dusty Jordan, and chemical tests analyzing water quality with ACD’s Huron Pines AmeriCorps member Brian Talsma.
