Paul Wiemerslage, environmental education coordinator of the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies in Mancelona received project funding on Oct. 18 from the Kalkaska chapter of 100+ Women Who Care, to offer low cost educational field trips for all Kalkaska Public School classes. The Institute offers day programs for students covering topics such as:  Mammals, Insects, Wetlands and Michigan History.

KALKASKA – Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies will soon be able to offer low cost educational programming to the students of Kalkaska Public Schools thanks to the Kalkaska 100+ Women Who Care organization.

The Kalkaska chapter of 100+ Women Who Care gives thousands of dollars to organizations by pooling member contributions. Twice a year, proposals are pitched by local organizations or projects and each 100+ Women member, or team of members, pledges $100 in exchange for a vote. The proposal with the most votes receives the total amount of funds raised at the meeting.

"Thank you members for your commitment to our community,” said founding member Pat Sohn, reminding the audience gathered on Oct. 18 that generosity matters.

“We make an impact. We make a difference," she added.

For their second meeting of 2018, 100+ Women gathered in the Kalkaska United Methodist Church on Oct. 18 to hear proposals from two organizations. Paul Wiemerslage spoke on behalf of the Au Sable Institute located near Big Twin Lake, near Mancelona, while Rebecca Lessard spoke on behalf of the Wings of Wonder raptor sanctuary and rehabilitation in Empire.

Au Sable Institute and Wiemerslage won the vote and received $6,000 in contributions to further environmental education field trips for Kalkaska Public Schools students that complement and enrich Michigan science standards for education.
