Local VFW event continues to grow, promote role in community

Despite the falling snow and cool temperatures, more than 300 youngsters took part in last Saturday’s third annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Land ‘O Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8684 in Kalkaska, including brothers Jude and Jeb Terrell.
KALKASKA – There was a little bit more behind the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Land ‘O Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8684 in Kalkaska on Saturday, March 31.
Hundreds of children, accompanied by family or friends, again flocked to the post on Hyde Street in Kalkaska. The youngsters picked up thousands of plastic eggs filled with candy and prizes. And, a handful of lucky participants even went home with a new bicycle.
The event, now in its third year, was the result of a brainstorming session by members of the local VFW post’s auxiliary. That session sparked the idea behind offering a fun event for kids and families, while also raising community awareness about the organization.
“It was to get people to the VFW, to show them what we’re all about,” said Shannon Allen, a first-year trustee for the auxiliary.
According to organizers, more than 300 kids attended last year’s egg hunt. And, even more were believed to have gathered at the post this past Saturday.
“It was huge last year,” Allen said. “And, I believe we had at least that many this year – or even more.”
