Meadow Brook Foundation program develops remedy for nursing shortage
BELLAIRE – In the late 1990s, the growing Meadow Brook Medical Care facility in Bellaire was facing the same challenges that nursing homes throughout the United States faced as populations of older people continued to rise in the country with the aging “Baby Boomer” generation – how to get more licensed, certified nurses to work in nursing home facilities.
“And it was a particular issue in the more lightly populated, rural areas such as Antrim County,” said David Schulz, administrative services director at Meadow Brook. “Although we all know what a beautiful area we live in, not everybody wants to live here.”
That’s when it was decided that if trained nurses couldn’t be found locally, the best course of action was to develop from within, with employees from Meadow Brook that were interested in improving their careers and lifestyles.
To that end, the Meadow Brook Foundation was created in 2002, and the Foundation’s Career Enhancement Program was developed a short time later.
