BELLAIRE – Antrim County's Veterans Affairs office has a new full-time service officer.

A 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, Walter J. Bedell began assisting part-time service officer Tim Cary and longtime service officer Deborah Peters with their workload on April 2.

The son of attorney Walter H. Bedell, of Central Lake, the retired naval officer said he was eager to move to the Bellaire area as soon as possible after his release from the military in August 2016.

"I was raised in southeastern Michigan, in the Waterford area," he said. "But my family would come up to the Bellaire area often to visit with my grandmother and the rest of the Bedell family, so moving here has been very much like coming home.

"Antrim County is a beautiful area and a good place to raise a family," he added.

Moving with Bedell was his wife Sandra, who is currently attending nursing school at NMC, and the couple's four children, all of whom are now enrolled in the Bellaire Public School District.
