The annual powwow and rededication ceremony has become of the most popular events held at the park, with 500-600 people flocking to the event each year. Besides being a cultural celebration of the area’s tribal history, the gathering also marks the 16h anniversary of the township park.

SPRINGFIELD TWP. – If you’ve been to any of the events at the Springfield Township Park and Recreation Area at the intersection of Creighton and Lund roads, you’ve seen, if not met, Hank Parkey.

A longtime volunteer at the park, Parkey is currently the chairman of the township’s Park and Recreation Committee. But, the 60-year-old local resident said he was notifying his fellow committee members on Tuesday, Aug. 7, that he was stepping down due to health reasons.

“I’m going to resign from the park committee,” Parkey said. “It’s time for the next generation to step up and take over.

“I don’t want to step down,” he added. “I just can’t do it anymore.”

Parkey still has one more event to help organize as committee chairman, however. That’s the annual Ah-Go-Sah Trail Traditional Powwow & Rededication celebration on Saturday, Sept. 1.

“We do have the powwow mostly set for this year,” he added. “Next year, someone else will have to step up and organize the powwow.”
