REGION – Autumn Reeves, of South Boardman, recently won the 37th annual Grand Traverse Regional Spelling Bee and will soon head out to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

But words and letters are nothing new to the sixth-grader at Forest Area Middle School.

Autumn was good at spelling and reading early on, according to her mother Amy Reeves.

Amy thinks that was because she struggled with fertility, so upon becoming pregnant with Autumn, she read to her all the time and continued reading to her after she was born.

“Autumn went into kindergarten at 4 years old,” said Amy. “They wanted to move her up because she was already so advanced, but I chose to keep her there.” Amy went on to explain how, despite Autumn’s intelligence at that age, the Forest Area teacher still worked hard to challenge her daughter.

As a fifth-grader last year, Autumn also competed in the spelling bee, but came up short. This year, Autumn said she and her mother were, “in it for the win.” They both enjoy competition – even beyond the academic.
