Verizon Wireless engineer John Crane is shown speaking to residents at a recent public hearing held to consider amending Kearney Township's zoning ordinance to allow construction of a cell phone tower at Shanty Creek Resorts.

BELLAIRE – More than 50 residents of subdivisions surrounding the Shanty Creek and Hawk's Eye resorts attended a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 19 to protest a proposed amendment to Kearney Township's zoning ordinance that would allow for construction of a new cell phone tower.

The proposed tower would be a free standing 170-foot monopole located directly adjacent to the 135-foot tall water tank at Shanty Creek's Summit Lodge, according to John Crane, an attorney and civil engineer for Verizon Wireless, which initially began seeking permission to construct the tower last spring.

"Under Kearney Township's zoning ordinance, a structure of this height is not permitted," Crane said.

"So we are requesting an amendment to the ordinance that would allow the tower, which will not have any guide wires or lights," he added. "There are no secrets – this is needed to ensure good cell phone service in the area."

Cell phone equipment currently located on top of the water tank would be removed, Crane said, saying later during the hearing that the water tank – which is in need of repairs – does not have the structural strength to support new cell phone equipment.

However, with just one or two exceptions, all of those who spoke during the hearing, which was part of the Kearney Township Planning Commission's regular monthly business meeting, were against making any changes at all.
