Scouts race to fun at annual Pinewood Derby

Local scouts and spectators watch as a trio of wooden cars zooms down the track at the Kalkaska United Methodist Church on Beebe Road during the annual Pinewood Derby hosted by Kalkaska Cub Scout Pack No. 629. For Cub Scouts, the top three finishers in each division advance to the regional Pinewood Derby on April 9 at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Traverse City.

 

KALKASKA – Ask any Cub Scout or Boy Scout and they’ll tell you they participate in many fun-filled activities each year, as they also work to earn badges and climb the ranks of scouting. But, probably one of the most enjoyable, and also competitive, events is the annual Pinewood Derby.

For the derby, scouts build handcrafted, wooden cars, some highly decorated, which can reach speeds of more than 150 mph while racing down the bright metal track.

Scouts, as well as family and friends, of Cub Scout Pack No. 629 again packed Kalkaska United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 3, for its annual Pinewood Derby.

“It’s my favorite day of the year,” said Terri Sibole, a local scout leader. “I love watching what the kids come up with for designs.
