Sports are back

REGION — High school sports teams took the field for first time since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the end of the winter sports season in March on Monday as football practices across the state signaled the first sign that sports have returned.

The 2020 fall season kicked off with football as the first sport to begin full team activities and teams around the area took advantage, holding workouts as allowed by the MHSAA. Practices for the first week are limited to sessions consisting of conditioning, physical training and skill work with no other player equipment than helmets. The first practice using full pads can be held on Monday, Aug. 17.

Each of the other fall sports that impact area schools — cross country, girls golf, boys tennis, boys soccer and volleyball — all held their first practices on Wednesday.
