KALKASKA – There will be plenty of mirth and laughter, and maybe even a tear or two, as Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7 again hosts its annual “Fallen Firefighters Memorial Picnic” on Saturday, Aug. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. at its station house on Laurel Street in Kalkaska.

The annual gathering is a multifaceted event, allowing the community to visit the station house and is a time to remember those who have served their community with a short memorial ceremony at 2 p.m., as well as to help raise funds in support of the local fire department.

“It's always a great turnout,” said Derek Hogerheide, Station No. 7 fire chief. “We love to have the public come in and see our station, equipment and the amazing people that are tasked with using it.

“It's important for the community to have a strong bond with all of the emergency services,” he added.

The picnic will again feature a plethora of activities for all ages, including a silent auction, bounce house and a variety of kids’ activities.

“We will have a water slide for the kids, as well as a bounce house,” said local firefighter Shannon Allen, also one of the event’s organizers. “It's supposed to be a warm day so the water slide will be great for the kids to cool off.

“As usual, we will have our silent auction, 50/50 drawings; DJ Stosh will host our family friendly tunes and announcements.

“Lauren Gunderson will be on staff for the day to offer face painting for the kids – and adults, too,” she added. “Chelsea Davis will also be on staff selling tickets and T-shirts. (And) we've partnered with McLean's to offer free smoke alarms on site.”
