TART trail route approved through Elk Rapids
ELK RAPIDS — The approval of a route through the village of Elk Rapids means that a much-discussed extension of the TART bicycle trail, vehemently opposed by many property owners, can now proceed unimpeded through the western corridor of Antrim County.
The current trail, now known as the Nakwema Trail, runs from Bunker Hill Road in Acme to the intersection of U.S. 31 and M-72, where it turns east, ending at Lautner Road near the Meijer shopping complex in Acme. Several sections of the paved trail remain on the drawing boards and have not yet been constructed.
TART's long-term plans intend for the trail to pass through Antrim County to Charlevoix County, where the pathway will eventually hook up to the existing Little Traverse Wheelway bicycle trail system.
For several years, Antrim County had been a stopping point for the trail, with the TART organization unable to secure the cooperation of either property owners concerned about littering, trespassing, and other possible problems, or township governments in the path of the trail.
