Vardar United FC finishes runner-up at the USA Cup

BLAINE, Minn. — Elk Rapids varsity girls soccer coach Andrea Krakow took over the coaching reigns of the U15 Vardar United FC girls soccer team, leading the girls to second place finish in sudden death overtime at the USA Cup Tournament last week.

The Vardar team, based out of Northern Michigan, is made up of girls from Boyne City, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Harbor Springs, Gaylord and Elk Rapids. The USA Cup is one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in the world, showcasing 1,152 teams from 20 countries, 22 states, and five Canadian provinces.

Tryouts were held in June, but regular Vardar coach Ed Fantozzi, who is also the Boyne City girls soccer coach, was unable to continue after having a knee replacement. Fantozzi looked no further than Elk Rapids, asking Krakow if she would take over the U15 squad.
