Veldboom the pace setter for area’s girls cross country

REGION — Time and again this season Ellsworth’s Judy Veldboom proved she’s No. 1.

Not only was she the Lancers’ top runner throughout the year, but she also finished as the overall finisher at four different meets. She also was among the top 10 three other times, including at the regional meet, solidifying the sophomore standout as the All-Area girls cross country runner of the year.

While Veldboom was leading the Lancers back to the state finals, where they took 17^th this year with a young squad, the Lancers had plenty of help at the top of their roster. Veldboom’s classmate Christy Figueroa and eighth-grader Maia Romeyn give Ellsworth a formidable lineup that figures to be tearing up courses on a local and statewide level for the next few years to come.
