BELLAIRE – A cell phone tower that Verizon – one of the country's largest communications companies – intends to build at Shanty Creek Resorts was the main topic of discussion Monday during the Kearney Township Board of Trustees' monthly meeting.

Rumored for the past several months, the township received verification of the company's plans to build a tower at Shanty Creek when a zoning permit application, site plan and "fall zone" letter was received late last week, according to township supervisor Ed Niepoth.

"The site plan calls for a 197-foot monopole tower that will be located right next to the resort’s water tower, which I believe is 100 feet tall, at Summit Lodge," said Niepoth.

"This will improve cell phone coverage in the area, they say," he added. "Apparently, the water tower, which is where cell phone equipment is currently located, can't handle any more antennas."
