KALKASKA – Currently, the Village of Kalkaska has no treasurer. That’s because the Kalkaska Village Council voted 4-2 to fire its former treasurer, Jennifer Standerfer, at its Nov. 5 meeting.

But, the vacancy could be filled – and soon – as village officials grapple with options on how to structure the post, including returning to the treasurer being an elected official.

Village President Harley Wales said officials have already taken the first step of a potential restructuring of the treasurer’s duties by advertising for an accounting assistant, an individual which would fulfill many of the treasurer’s daily duties.

“The 'accountant' portion has been advertised and will be filled in the next week, as a management decision,” Wales said. “This will be a pick of (village) manager (Scott) Yost.

“The other duties of a traditional treasurer are still to be determined, however,” he added. “I still have the vision of a traditional, elected official. If it is so determined, it would at this point be an appointment, until the next scheduled vote.”

Previously, the village treasurer was elected. And, Wales said the idea of returning to that is one he continues to hear from other Kalkaska residents.
