BELLAIRE — The word ‘assistant’ is no longer attached to Tom Baeckeroot’s name.

The longtime Bellaire football coach is stepping into the head coach’s role for the first time this season, selected to fill the void left behind when former head coach Brock Robinson passed away this spring.

Baeckeroot may not have ever been the school’s head coach on the gridiron, but he has a wealth of experience on the Bellaire sidelines under head coaches George Pratt, Jeff Hebden and Robinson. Most recently Baeckeroot worked with the youth programs and also helped out the varsity squad on game day.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” Baeckeroot said of getting the Eagles’ top football coaching position. “Brock and I have been friends for a long time. Coaching together with our kids growing up together, we did Little League on and off. I wanted to get back to the varsity level. It’s kind of where I started my career here in Bellaire years ago. I took some time off and went through Pop Warner and middle school, which is what I’ve been doing the last couple years.”
