KALKASKA — The Kalkaska boys basketball team gets about a two-and-a-half week break for the holidays until it faces Manton on Jan. 4.

The Blazers would likely rather just keep playing based upon how they’ve started the season.

Kalkaska (2-1) matched its win total from all of last season in just its third game when it slipped past Lake Michigan Conference foe Harbor Springs on Thursday with a 51-48 victory over the Rams.

Kalkaska led for most of the game but had to battle back to get the win after surrendering that advantage in the fourth quarter. Falling behind by as many as five points with just over three minutes to play, the Blazers rallied and took the lead for good on a four-point play by Cooper Swikoski with 30 seconds remaining. The two teams went nearly neck and neck down the stretch, but the outcome was sealed when the Rams’ missed a potential game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds.

“It’s exciting. It’s good to win,” said first-year Kalkaska varsity coach Matt Olds. “The guys fought it tonight. We almost let it slip away and battled back. That shows something. I would say the first (three) games we battled pretty hard and that’s a good thing. I like the fight in us.”
