EASTPORT — During their first meeting of September last week, the Antrim County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of an old schoolhouse and surrounding property adjacent to the Antrim Creek Natural Area, discussed staffing in the county's Equalization office, and approved an agreement with Great Lakes Energy to provide Internet service to Barnes Park.

With board chair Terry VanAlstine on vacation, the meeting was conducted by vice-chair Karen Bargy, who was criticized during public comment for her stance in support of mask mandates, with several public comments made against the Health Dept. of Northwest Michigan's mandate of last week ordering masks to be worn by everyone in educational settings.

Public comment was also made in support of the purchase of the old one-room schoolhouse and surrounding two acres on Dixie Highway adjacent to the Antrim Creek Natural Area, a purchase recommended by the members of the Antrim Creek Natural Area Commission after a closed session regarding the matter during its meeting of Aug. 25.
