BELLAIRE – The Antrim County Board of Commissioners last Thursday approved lowering the millage rate for county-wide recycling this year, which was originally approved by voters as part of the Aug. 2 primary election last year.

The ballot language, initially approved by commissioners last April read: “Shall the tax limitation imposed … against all taxable property in the County be increased by up to 25/100 of one mill ($.25 per $1,000 of taxable value) on the taxable value of such property for a period of four years, 2017 through 2020, inclusive, for the purpose of providing funds for the operation and maintenance of a county-wide recycling program.”

County Administrator Peter Garwood on Thursday told commissioners that the latest information from the equalization department indicated that a full levy of the 0.2500 mills for this year would result in revenue of $443,647. However, the recycling program’s contract with American Waste has a “not-to-exceed” price of $326,000 for 2018.
