Central Lake considering 'social district'

CENTRAL LAKE — During a virtual meeting held via Zoom on Wednesday, Feb. 10, the Central Lake Village Council agreed to purchase a new street sweeper, approved a resolution allowing the village to borrow funds to purchase and remodel Central Lake's new village hall, and agreed to consider creating a ‘social district’ in downtown Central Lake. 

Already in use in the cities of Cadillac and Adrian, a social district in the village would allow people to walk certain streets between business establishments serving alcohol and the village's public areas, such as the public boat docks and Thurston Park Campground on Intermediate Lake, with open alcohol in their possession. 

"This doesn't mean that someone could hang out on the streets while drunk and disorderly," noted trustee Ralph Hines. "This means that they could walk back to the campground, or their boat, with a cup of alcohol purchased locally in their hands."
