Central Lake to keep waste station open until spring

CENTRAL LAKE - Confronted by a room full of residents determined to keep the township's waste receiving station open, the Central Lake Township Board of Trustees reluctantly agreed to keep the station open through the winter during its monthly meeting last week.

Carole Ingell, a member of the ad-hoc committee created to consider the situation two months ago, kicked off the discussion by asking if the board had considered the recommendation made last month to consider purchasing a new compactor for approximately $37,000.

Noting the township's current bank balance of $610,000, Ingell presented numbers regarding the township's costs to operate the current compactor, which she claimed is approximately $46,000 a year, noting that income from the station garnered the township approximately $88,000 in 2018.

Township Supervisor Stan Bean disagreed with that number, then listed the costs, including salaries and pensions of the township's employees that run the station and depreciation of equipment.

"You have to look at the whole package," he said.
