Central Lake mourns closing of downtown grocery store

CENTRAL LAKE - One week after the announcement of the impending closing of the village's only full-service grocery store, the community continued to mourn the loss of the Central Lake Village Market.

Village Market owners Kevin and Rick Young announced the closing of their Central Lake store, one of three markets the family owns in Antrim County, on Monday, Sept. 27, due to continued financial losses, according to a short social media release.

The news came as a shock to both employees and customers, many of whom worked or shopped at the market for many years when it was owned by the Plaggemars family and operated under the name of Central Food Center prior to the purchase of the business by the Young family in 2011. Kelly Young left the family business in 2017 to pursue an interest in the retail marijuana field. 

Former Antrim County Commissioner and Central Lake Village Council trustee Melissa Zelenak was one of the market's longtime customers.
