Crowning moment

CENTRAL LAKE — For the first time all season Central Lake-Ellsworth was pushed to the limit.

But while playing in a game that was still not decided well into the fourth quarter may have been foreign to the Trojans, the final outcome was not as they won their eighth straight game to start the year with a 42-28 football victory over Onekama in a battle of unbeaten teams on Friday at Herrick Field.

The win gave Central Lake-Ellsworth (8-0) the Midwest Central Michigan 8-Man Conference championship.

“I’m happy, personally, that we won, but I’m just so happy for the kids,” said Central Lake-Ellsworth head coach Rob Heeke. “I’m so happy that they were resilient enough to come back from the summer, when people didn’t believe in this group, didn’t believe in 8-man. The stands were packed tonight. Conference champs and everything they’ve put in. It’s bigger than 8-0. There were a lot of people — a lot of naysayers, a lot of doubters. These kids answered the bell. They stood up and they answered it. It’s a pretty special group.”
