DeYoung starts first season as Ellsworth girls hoops coach

ELLSWORTH — Jeremy DeYoung is hoping the Ellsworth girls basketball team can pick up right where it left off last season.

DeYoung, who has moved over from the assistant coach position to that of the program’s head coach, got his first season leading the Lady Lancers underway on Monday — the first day girls hoops teams across the state were able to practice for the upcoming season.

While DeYoung is in a new role for this year’s Ellsworth team, it shouldn’t be much of a drastic change for a team that returns a great deal of experience from a team that went 10-9 overall a year ago and finished second in the Northern Lakes Conference. The big thing is those players contributed heavily to a solid finish to the season. The Lancers played well in close losses to Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s and Gaylord St. Mary, and preceded those games with eight wins over a stretch of 10 games.
