Elks, Blazers and Ironmen qualify for state finals at track regional

CHARLEVOIX — Elk Rapids, Kalkaska and Mancelona’s track and field teams each advanced athletes and teams to the Division 3 state finals with elite performances at the regional competition on Friday.

The Elks qualified in four events, including in the boys and girls 100-meter dashes, the girls 400 relay and the girls 200 as they cashed in with regional championships in each. Nevada Molby had the biggest impact for the Elks, winning the girls 100 (13.09), 200 (27.84) and anchoring the winning 400 relay (53.84) along with Heidi Kay, Kate Henderson and Sierra Molby. Riley Williams picked up a regional crown in the 100 with a time of 11.35, while Sierra Molby earned a spot in the finals with a runner-up finish in the 100 (13.37).

Mancelona’s boys, which finished third overall, also qualified for the finals in three events. The Ironmen were led by regional high jump champion Jayden Alfred, who leaped 5-11, but they also punched their ticket in the 400 and 3,200 relays with second-place finishes. The 400 team of Alfred, Johnny Ancel, Sam Squires and Wesly Fulk ran a time of 45.64. The 3,200 team, which clocked in at 8:36.98, included James Dunne, Ben Palmer, Ancel and Tyler McClure.

Kalkaska qualified in three events as Cole McKenzie took second in the 300 hurdles (42.54), and Catilyn Weir was second in the 100 hurdles (17.85) and 300 hurdles (53.63).
