Elks' varsity football coach steps down
ELK RAPIDS — Football fans in Elk Rapids received some surprising news this week when it was announced that head varsity football coach Keith Schulte was resigning his position.
“Elk Rapids is a great place. There is nothing bad to say. I have had awesome support,” said Schulte. “I have to square up some health issues and I have to take care of myself and put my family first. There are no scandals here and no rumors, just personal and family stuff. I hope to coach again in the coming years.”
Schulte was hired by former Elk Rapids varsity coach Ed Schindler prior to the 2016 season to coach linemen and as the Elk Rapids physical education teacher. Schulte brought a 15-year coaching resume, with successful stints as head coach at Midland Dow and Sanford Meridian, and was rumored to be heir apparent to Schindler as head coach one day.
