Ellsworth beats Bellaire for first time since 2010

BELLAIRE — The Ellsworth boys basketball team had not defeated Bellaire since a 2010 district semifinal game, but the Lancers ended that 13-game drought on Friday with a 54-48 victory.

The Lancers (4-4) overcame a slow start in the first quarter to lead for most of the second half but had to hold off a late Bellaire rally to get the rare win over the Eagles (1-6).

“I’ve never beat them as a coach,” said Ellsworth coach Jarod Steenwyk. “I’ve only beaten Bellaire as a player three times. That’s freshman on up. Never touched them until my senior year. Bellaire has got such a good program. Bellaire still has some scrappy players who play hard. Pretty good basketball players who have some knowledge of the game and they move pretty well, and Paul Koepke is a heck of a coach.”
