Mike Tinkle listens to reports by various administrators shortly after being appointed as the newest member of the Kalkaska Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Tinkle replaces former board member and president Kevin Davis, who recently accepted a job transfer to a different state. Tinkle, who is also on the Nov. 6 ballot, will serve the remainder of Davis' term, which is set to expire Dec. 31, 2020.

KALKASKA – Voters within the Kalkaska Public Schools district still have a chance to vote for Mike Tinkle and possibly elect him to a full six-year term on the school district’s board of education.

But, now, the 30-year-old Tinkle will be running as an incumbent, rather than a challenger, after being appointed to the school board during a special meeting Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Tinkle was unanimously approved, 6-0, to fill the remaining term of former board member and president, Kevin Davis, who resigned effective Sept. 30 after announcing he had accepted a job transfer that would take him out of state.

Tinkle was one of two candidates to be interviewed Tuesday. And, he had already received Davis’ endorsement at the September board meeting.

“Mike was, to me, a very easy choice,” said veteran board member John Rogers. “Not downplaying the quality of the other applicant, as she too would have made a great board member.

“(But) Mike has proven that he wants to be on this board and serve his community,” Rogers added. “He attends nearly every meeting and he has applied for appointments in the past. He has shown that he is dedicated to this district.”

After taking the oath of office Tuesday night, Tinkle, who is employed at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center as a physician outreach coordinator, will serve the remainder of Davis’ six-year term in office, which is set to expire Dec. 31, 2020.
